Shamus’s practice centers on commercial litigation. He has a wide range of experience in complex commercial disputes, including defense of banking, mortgage lending, and consumer financing services companies in class actions in state in federal courts. Shamus also has experience in antitrust litigation and counseling on antitrust compliance issues. In addition, Shamus works with companies developing intellectual property portfolios and strategizing brand protection.

He maintains an active pro bono practice, where he secured victories in a commercial landlord-tenant dispute affirmed by the Massachusetts appeals court, obtained an injunction in a breach of a partnership agreement, and successfully prevented the eviction of a Navy veteran in Housing Court.

He has also represented juvenile clients in state and immigration courts with Kids in Need of Defense. In that capacity, he recently submitted an amicus brief to the First Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of several advocacy and community groups regarding the use of gang database information in immigration proceedings.

Prior to joining Gesmer Updegrove, Shamus was an associate at a large international law firm in Boston. In his spare time, Shamus enjoys staying involved in his community and neighborhood. He also currently serves on the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
